BIO

Bri Horne (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist based on Bunurong and Boonwurrung Country on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. With a focus on photography, and a practice that spans across poetry and performance art, Bri explores the connection between self, humanity and nature. Her work aims to bring to presence that as humans, we are not separate from nature, we are nature. Sitting somewhere between documentary and fine art photography, Bri’s eye is attuned to the sensibility of what is present. She explores what it means to be human in the everpresent context of the metacrisis, and how art and the beauty of the natural world can be a balm. Bri is a founding member of Shoreham based artist collective, Deep See Survey.




ARTIST STATEMENT

I create photographic works that explore the connection between self, humanity and nature. Sitting somewhere between documentary and fine art photography, my work lingers in the beauty, wonder and mystery of the natural world. My practice is led by intuition and attuning to the sensibility of what is present in the moment: how light transforms, how water relates, what my body is drawn to. 

Being with the everpresent context of the metacrisis, and having lived in close proximity to mental illness my whole life, I’m interested in making work that is an antidote to pain. Not as a way to avoid, but as a way to deepen into aliveness.

I have a particular interest in 35mm and 120mm film photography, and how analogue mediums have a greater capacity for capturing the truth of any given moment in time on earth. My educational background in theatre and performance has informed how the role of presence and embodiment are seeped in the art I practice and create. 

In this age of AI, I find myself going deeper in the opposite direction — allowing the felt experience of being human to hum in the process of making, and in the work itself. I’ve recently begun deepening this aspect of my practice by handprinting works in the darkroom, and feel excited to continue along this path.
